Was there anything about the Amiga that made you wish you had one? Were there any games that made you envious of Amiga owners? Did you think Amiga games were relevant to the 16-bit generation, or could they mostly be ignored? Do you think the Amiga left any lasting legacy, or gaming DNA, that can be observed in games today?įor people whose main machine was a SNES or Mega Drive at the time:

Did you have a full understanding of what was happening in arcade gaming and American/Japanese consoles? Or were you mostly informed by what was happening on the Amiga? Tl dr: Was the Amiga (and Atari ST) shite compared to consoles?įor people whose main machine was an Amiga or Atari ST at the time: A Mega Drive or SNES gamer gained a knowledge and a history of Japanese and American gaming that still matters in the current generation. They both hosted a ton of competent arcade ports and original titles that made them relevant to the 16-bit era. Sega had a profound arcade history and their Mega Drive mascot Sonic. Nintendo had Mario, Zelda, Samus, and a world-renowned gaming legacy that they continue to recycle. any trace of gaming DNA that matters today. I can't imagine that the Amiga left any relevant legacy. I suppose I'm bringing this up because I was shocked to realise that I may have spent the 16-bit era playing in a dead-end.

Not to mention the ballache of disk loading and disk swapping, and 1-button joysticks - things no console gamer ever had to suffer. Playing them today shows an amateurishness in their graphics and design.

Nearly all the good games were ported to Mega Drive, SNES or PC arcade conversions were often laughably shite and what remained exclusive to Amiga were mostly amateurish imitations of console games: Leander, Switchblade II, Superfrog, Assassin, Magic Pockets, Xenon II, Project-X, Great Giana Sisters. I know there were a few genuinely great Amiga games, and some important developers who got their start on the Amiga.īut honestly, I hate to say this. I know there were some awesome things about the Amiga: games were much cheaper than console carts there were awesome computer game genres like point-and-click adventures and god games the coverdisk/PD scene was interesting and gave kids more stuff to play cheaply there was a real UK spirit to game development. But when you put the Amiga experience next to the Mega Drive or the SNES, the Amiga fails on nearly every count. I wish I'd got a Mega Drive or SNES when I was 12 instead.

Then I turned to the Amiga emulator to revisit many of the games I played as a kid, and my heart sank as an inevitable conclusion drew closer: I played loads of SNES and Mega Drive games. Recently I had an emulation binge where I caught up with a ton of games I'd missed on consoles and at the arcade in the 16-bit era. Most of my friends had Amigas too, and I was quite sheltered from what else was happening in the 16-bit era. The Amiga defined my whole experience of gaming. The Amiga 500 was my first real gaming machine that I got for Christmas when I was 12, so I'll always cherish it.
